Nature and wildlife lovers around the world have been treated to an amazing spectacle at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge since the launch of its livestream cameras at the waterhole in late December 2023. Over the past month, the cameras have captured an array of wildlife, showcasing the diversity of the ecosystem surrounding this iconic lodge. Sightings have ranged from herds of elephants and buffaloes to giraffes and the charming visit of a genet to the Buffalo Bar viewing deck.
- Elephant and Buffalo Herds
One of the most awe-inspiring sightings has been the frequent visits by herds of elephants and buffaloes. The waterhole seems to be a popular meeting point for them, providing a unique opportunity for viewers to see them quenching their thirst and engaging in social interactions. The sheer size and grace of these animals against the backdrop of the scenic landscape is a sight to behold.
2. Genet visits the Buffalo Bar Viewing Deck
The cameras have not only captured the larger animals but also some of the more elusive and smaller species. A particularly exciting moment occurred when a genet, a small nocturnal carnivore, made a surprise appearance below the lodge’s viewing deck, providing an up-close encounter for virtual onlookers.
3. Buffaloes Asserting Their Dominance
Viewers were on the edge of their seats when the cameras captured a fascinating interaction between buffaloes and elephants. Buffaloes, known for their powerful nature, were seen pushing elephants away from the waterhole! Such moments highlight the importance of water sources as a limited and contested resource in the wild.
4. Graceful Giants
Giraffes, with their elegant necks reaching towards the treetops, have made regular appearances at the waterhole, gracing the livestream with their presence. Alongside them, kudu, warthogs, and waterbuck have added to the diversity, creating a lively display of Africa’s diverse wildlife.
5. Crocodile Challenges Elephants
In an enthralling scene, a crocodile made three bold attempts to bite a group of elephants that had come to the waterhole to drink. The air was filled with tension as the elephants blocked the crocodile’s aggressive moves. This fascinating encounter served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the animal kingdom and left a lasting impression on all those who were fortunate enough to see it.
6. Birder’s Paradise:
Besides mammals, the area around the waterhole is a haven for a variety of bird species, and the vibrant colours and calls of various birds have turned the livestream into a birdwatcher’s delight. The diverse species of birds that can be seen include the majestic African fish eagle, marabou storks, grey herons, yellow-billed kites, pied kingfishers, little and greater egrets, hamerkops, red-billed oxpeckers, Egyptian and spur-winged geese, African jacanas, and wagtails.
In just one month since the launch of the livestream cameras at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge waterhole, viewers have been treated to a front-row seat to the wonders of the African wilderness. As the livestream continues to bring the beauty of Victoria Falls to screens worldwide, it also serves as a tool for conservation awareness, underlining the importance of preserving our wildlife for future generations.
